Things to Consider Before you Build
HIGH MILEAGE ENGINES TIPS
- Cut open your oil filter. if there is brass in the filter there are only
two places where their is brass. The cam plate or the thrust washers on the
crankshaft
- is your engine noisy, try and determine the noise origination
- top end noise include piston valve train
- cam chest includes lifters, cam tensioners cam plate
- oil pressure or lack of
- lower end crankshaft noise
Top end inspection
- check wrist pin bushing clearance
- inspect piston, if you see lots of wear on piston skirt, this is good sign
crankshaft is going bad
NOTE: it is real hard to determine if rod is defective on most TC88 engines.
Cam Chest inspection
- check cam chain tensioners for wear
- check cam plate surface where oil pumps fits. If there is excessive wear,
cam plate needs to be replaced
- check brass bushing for excessive wear. if brass bushing shows excessive
wear, check crankshaft for run out
- crankshaft run-out, in most cases if over .004 of run out this is
considered excessive.
